An Interesting Interview with MARVAC Member Betty Workman
Question: You and husband Bill have owned and operated Vacation Trailer Park and Vacation Trailer Sales in Benzonia, Michigan, for many years. How has each business changed over those years?
Answer: Technology has been the big change. Everything we do is now online: Reservations, RV Sales, Hiring Employees, etc. It is definitely an online world. If you are not connected and respond to emails within a short period of time, you will lose the business to someone who is connected and paying attention to the INBOX.
Question: You currently serve on the Michigan Travel Commission as a member. How have you represented the campground and RV industry on the Commission?
Answer: I was certainly the “unknown” person when attending the very first Travel Commission Meeting in Detroit. It has been an honor and pleasure to serve these past four years and represent the “Camping and Recreational Industry”. Since we are a growing industry and a very important part of the “Pure Michigan” experience, the timing for representation was perfect. I am now chairing the Highway Hospitality Committee. This committee meets before our Travel Commission meetings and is about creating the best possible experience for the travelers (campers included) at the MDOT Welcome Centers. Also, I am co-chair of the Resources & Environment Committee of the Travel Commission’s Strategic Plan. This committee is about finding ways that the State of Michigan continues to represent the “Pure” in Pure Michigan to all the guests coming in to our state.
Question: What one thing would you like to see change for the RV or campground industry here in Michigan?
Answer: It is important that our industry always have representation on State committees that implement change in our licensing of campgrounds & dealerships.
Question: You’ve been on the MARVAC board of directors, served on various committees and a loyal member of the association. What do you feel are the benefits to a MARVAC membership?
Answer: MARVAC is so progressive and professional. There has never been a question that has not been answered and the networking opportunities are excellent at various events such as RV shows and camping industry annual meetings. Along with marketing values online and in the MARVAC RV & Campsite Guide, this organization has not only been a great resource and value to our business but continues to make us very ‘Happy Campers’.
RVIA Committee Week Report
Dr. Richard Curtin, director of Consumer Research at the University of Michigan reported to a group of RV industry leaders at their annual Committee Week during a joint committee luncheon on Monday. Dr. Curtin projects shipments will total 349,400 units in 2014, an 8.8 percent increase above the 2013 total of 321,127. In addition the U of M professor stated RV shipments are also expected to rise for a sixth consecutive year in 2015 with wholesale production forecast to reach 360,100 units, a gain of 3.1 percent over the projected 2014 total, and the industry’s highest total since 2006. The estimated total for 2014 is up 111 percent from the industry’s 2009 recession low.
The four days of meetings included over 100 members of the RV and camping industry. Fourteen committees met to discuss such topics as seasonal camping; park model RVs; market information; industry training; public relations; Go RVing; legal and several other topics that concern the good of the industry. The meeting was held in Washington, D.C.
