for Camping with Your Dog
Make the camping experience with your canine enjoyable for all.
Avacation isn’t complete for many campers without
a four-legged family member along. In fact, it’s known that many people get into camping because they then
have the ability and flexibility to take their pets with them on their adventures. According to the 2014 American Camper Report presented by the Coleman Company and the Outdoor Foundation, 31-35 percent of campers of
all age groups went camping with their pets, with dogs
the most popular type of pet.
Whether you’re a first-timer or a veteran, it’s important to remember a few important things that will help keep your dog safe and healthy, a joy to have along on the ride, and a good neighbor around other campers. Here are
10 tips for camping with your dog.
Safety and Health
1. Do make sure your dog’s vaccines are up to date and all necessary medications are on hand. This is especially important for flea and tick prevention. According to an article by michiganradio.com, Michigan is in the midst of a tick boom, with ticks being in areas they weren’t a few years ago and worse in the typical areas.
This makes your dog more at risk to tick bites and Lyme’s disease, so make sure your dog takes preventative medicine.
2. Do bring water and food bowls. They can be the ones from home or you can purchase lightweight, travel-friendly ones that can be packed up easily for side trips and activities.
3. Do teach your dog recall and leave-it commands until he is reliable. This takes more planning ahead and training, before your dog is
at a campground and needs to put his training to use. A recall command – such as come or here or back – is important for your dog to know because it helps prevent him from running into
