South of Grand Rapids, this 4.26-mile loop traverses through mature northern woods. On a sunny day, it’ll feel like you’re walking beneath a fiery sun catcher. Parts of the trail require some uphill walking, and other parts are sandy so it’s a good workout for your muscles though not strenuous. You’ll quickly be rewarded with a scenic view of Lake Michigan. Stop and have a picnic at the beach, even though it is fall, and enjoy the crisp sound of the waves lapping on the shore.
DIFFICULTY: Easy-Moderate
LENGTH OF HIKE: Up to 7 miles
BEST COLOR: Late September-Early October

In addition to hiking to higher elevations to view the fall colors, campers can enjoy fall festivals and shows around the state that celebrate the beauty and bounty of the season. Make your fall color plans as soon as possible, and make sure to reference the MARVAC campground directory in this issue or online at www.marvac.org to find a place to stay nearest your chosen destination.
