Whether you’re an astronomy-buff or not, it’s hard to deny, meteor showers are a pretty amazing sight to take in. And this week, the meteor shower Eta Aquarid will be in its peak position. Below, you’ll find all the tips and information you’ll need to enjoy this spectacular event.
When is it?
Eta Aquarid peaks this year between Thursday, May 5 and Saturday, May 7. The best times to observe the shower are between 3 a.m. and dawn – especially on the morning of May 6th as the new moon will create optimal viewing conditions.
Usually, the final hour of dawn, right before the sun begins to rise, is the best time to observe. During this final hour of darkness, the night sky is flooded with meteors.
Where can I see it?
When it comes to observing meteor showers, the darker the sky, the better. If you live in a rural part of Michigan, an area that doesn’t experience light pollution, you should be able to view the show right from your own backyard.
However, if you live in a more populated area of Michigan, like Detroit, you’ll want to make a trip out of the city to a quieter area. A lot of our MARVAC member campgrounds offer a remote escape that could be ideal for this event.
If you’re looking to make this experience truly memorable, take a drive up to the Headlands International Dark Sky Park in Mackinaw City. The park is made up of over 550 acres of forests along the shoreline of Lake Michigan and is completely protected from artificial light. You are guaranteed a front row, uninterrupted view of the night sky. The park is open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, with free admission.
What supplies do I need?
First and foremost, you’ll want to bundle up, as many nights still dip as low as 30 degrees. Wear more layers than you think might be necessary; you can always shed some if you get too hot.
Pack multiple blankets, too – some for lying on and some for wrapping up in. If you prefer a more comfortable option than the ground, feel free to pack a lawn chair as well! But be careful, you don’t want to get too comfortable and fall asleep during the show!
And obviously, you cannot enjoy a meteor shower without snacks! A thermos of hot cocoa or coffee is always a great idea. You’ll also want a pocketful of star-themed candy, like Starbursts, Milky Ways, or Mars Bars for when you need that little sugar rush to keep you awake and alert.
