Northeast/Thumb: Highbanks Trail

Fifteen minutes from Oscoda in the Huron National Forest, this easy to walk trail can be anywhere from four to seven miles, depending on how keen you are. It’s a point-to-point route, so unless you have a vehicle at the other end, you’ll need to backtrack. The scenery is outstanding, the panoramas of the Au Sable River breathtaking, and the high points on the bluffs are mostly level so even children can enjoy the time on
the trail. There are monuments along the way of historic interest as well

as observation decks. A popular place to stop is Iargo Springs, where dams constructed
by early loggers still stand and create waterfalls from the natural, clear springs.

Three hundred acres of woodland just south
of Boyne City in northern Michigan offer something for everyone. A downhill ski area in the 1950s, hikers can
enjoy walks of 2 to 4.2 miles through moderate to challenging terrain. The gem of this recreation area is the crest of the hill, which requires climbing 462 steps to the observation decks. From there, hikers can see Boyne City, Lake Charlevoix, and, sometimes, a bit of Lake Michigan – and the majestic autumn cloak only Michigan can pull off.
DIFFICULTY: Moderate-Challenging LENGTH OF HIKE: 2-4.2 miles
